  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Former United manager Mourinho, who now coaches Fenerbahce in Turkey, has criticised Ratcliffe's lack of football know-how as the club's minority owner, claiming that "a lot needs to change" for the Red Devils to be successful again, and that Amorim has the potential to do "incredible" work at Old Trafford.

    WHAT MOURINHO SAID

He told : "Today, I think that with the change in ownership at the club, with an owner who doesn't have much experience in football but rather in sport… What happened to Ruben, from being the manager of the worst Manchester United in Premier League history to having continuity and confidence to continue and be Ruben Amorim, is a sign that a lot needs to change. With that stability… We all agree that he's a manager with great potential and personality. I think he has incredible potential to do great work."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Since Ratcliffe took over football operations at United in early 2024, the Premier League giants have arguably gone backwards. The club sacked manager Erik ten Hag last October but his replacement Amorim, arguably, has done even worse in the hot seat. The Red Devils have spent more than £120 million ($162.5m) on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo this summer but the first-team squad still needs a lot of work, and unless Amorim can get this team going, they could struggle again next season.

    WHAT NEXT?

While many will be waiting to see if Ratcliffe or Amorim respond to Mourinho's comments, United have just jetted off to the United States for their pre-season tour which includes fixtures against West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton over the next fortnight.
