A Paris Saint-Germain figurehead has appeared to aim a subtle dig at former goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma following his summer move to Manchester City. PSG football advisor Luis Campos has suggested that the Italian's salary demands were beyond their wage "policy" and that nobody is bigger than the club.

PSG chief hints at why Donnarumma left for Man City

Donnarumma played a key role in PSG's Champions League win last season but just a few months later, things turned sour, and he was sold to City for £26 million ($35m). Now, Campos has hinted that the Italy international asked for a salary that his performances did not merit.

He told RMC: "The club is more important than anyone else. That's changed at PSG. Donnarumma, it's a combination of circumstances that led to this decision. When he asks for a salary at the level of PSG before, not the current PSG.  Our policy is very much linked to merit: you earn more when you deserve it, and when you play. We took time to discuss the Gigio issue. We were obliged to find solutions if we couldn't reach an agreement with him."

PSG move on from Galacticos era

Much has been made of PSG moving on from their galacticos era of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, and Lionel Messi, and playing more as a team under manager Luis Enrique. And Campos reiterated that this is a collective effort, where individuals must get behind the French team's vision.

He added, "The star is the club, it's the whole group. The salary policy applies to everyone. The club's stability won't change based on a player who wants to be different. We're going to protect PSG. We always want to play well and win matches. With this policy, everyone understands that the coach doesn't give priority based on the player's status or background. It's not your background that will make you a starter at PSG. That's our policy."
